I get asked this question a lot. There are two main ways to determine how happy the workplace environment actually is. One way is to look at key metrics of the people. Turnover Rate, employee engagement levels, strength of peer to peer relations, levels of employee innovation, number of applicants, how they rate their leaders/supervisors are several key metrics that will reveal how happy the workplace is.
When Employees Are Happy, They are Much More Passionate About Their Work and Look Forward to Working.
The second way is to simply ask the people. This can be done by holding small team sessions to discuss how they feel about working there, is leadership sensitive to employee needs inside and outside of the workplace. Employee surveys can also be used.
I just delivered a session on Happiness to Marriott people and asked them directly via survey, if they feel that employee happiness is critical to them. 100% answered that it is extremely critical to them as they want to work for an organization that “cares about them”.
When asked why; the dominant answer was that when they are happy, they are much more passionate about their work and look forward to working.
